SCULPTURE |
|
I use the potter's wheel to make functional
pieces: bowls, platters, serving vessels, vases.
As one who loves to cook and arrange flowers, these are
the forms I use in my daily life. The glazes are ones I've formulated for use in my
oxidation kiln. Complex surfaces are
achieved through techniques of layering,
masking, and sgraffito. `
Since 2000, I have been working on a body of
sculptural forms using coil and slab construction, with
surfaces emphasizing texture as well as color. Organic
and swelling from the inside, these pots have the patina
of age and wear. The
Wanderers are a series of solitary figures in flowing
robes, ambiguous and open to
viewer interpretation.
Often I take the opportunity to
use various other firing methods: reduction, wood,
soda. Each of these processes requires
a separate approach to the form and how it is finished.
The excitement for me is to find the forms and glazes
which complement each other and make a whole greater
than the parts. My studio is in Columbia, Maryland.
